First consideration is the amount of electricity you want to produce and the environment in which it will be produced.  In the desert it is easy to product maximum electricity – no shadow and constant sun light.  But most of us do not live in the desert.  We live in communities with trees and other obstacles creating shadows.  We live in areas with limited sun light due to clouds and rain.  So each environment will demand more or fewer solar panels to produce the same amount of electricity.

Second consideration is the electric power created by the solar panel and how long it will last.  Each solar panel will produce a certain amount of electricity.  It varies depending upon the size of the solar panel and how it was made.  In addition you should consider how long a solar panel is guaranteed to last.  The longer they will last the better because they are expensive to replace.

Once you have decided to build a solar powered generator, size it to your needs.  How much will you save on your electric bill?  How many months of savings will it take to replace the cost of the solar powered generator?  Usually it will be years, but many less years then the system will last.  So those future years after payback are free electric savings.  So look to the long run.
